June Book Reviews

One week late? Oh wells. I’ve given up posting on time. Despite this being a crazy month with me training like mad for my third fight, I actually got a decent amount of reading in. Huzzah! Also seems like I was in a red book cover kind of mood. Totally not planned. Totally digging the aesthetic though.

I can’t recommend this series enough. A Conjuring of Light was a heart-wrenching, action-packed, feels everywhere ending to a great fantasy trilogy. As much as I loved it, I think my favorite book in the series may still be the first one. There were moments of brevity and light-heartedness whereas A Conjuring of Light was heavy and dark – as all series climaxes should be. Regardless, I totally fell in love with all of these characters and the only reason I’m even remotely capable of talking about it reasonably is because I finished this book at the very beginning of the month. So I’ve had four weeks to mourn its end. Trust me, I was a wreck.

Schwab comes up with the coolest premises and writes such believable fleshed out characters. Vicious was no different in that respect. I was disappointed though in the lack of scheming and complicated plotting particularly from a novel about two supposed geniuses. After reading the Shades of Magic series, I was expecting something a little less straight-forward. Either way, I’ll be picking up the sequel without a doubt!

I actually wrote a full review for this one. TL;DR : I was super impressed with the world-building and creativity of the this book, but super disappointed to see it devolve into a story of star-crossed lovers.

Yet another Schwab book! What can I say? I was trying to fill the void left by A Conjuring of Light. And yet again, cool world building, but I was left kinda of meh about this book. Even though I was left wanting more with Vicious, I still felt like her characters were unique and creative. What may have fell short for me here was that This Savage Song didn’t make me fall in love with its characters, nor did it have all those cool world-building details that the rest of her novels had. Maybe the fact that it was meant to be YA vs. an adult novel played a role. Idk. It reminded me a little bit of Legend by Marie Lu.

As usual, I’m also a bit behind on reading all of your posts too. Luckily, I’ve finally got a slow-paced weekend and I can’t wait to see what you’ve all been checking off your TBR’s!

WWW Wednesday #7

screen-shot-2017-02-15-at-12-14-11-pm

WWW Wednesday is a weekly MEME hosted by Taking on a World of Words. Simply answer the following questions.

The three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?

What did you recently finish reading?

What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

Still working my way through these two. Though it’s slow going because I find Maas’ writing style to be kind of slow and repetitive sometimes. You don’t have to tell me every time his purple eyes change direction, thank you very much. The Bear and the Nightingale just hasn’t fully drawn me in yet. It’s still too early on and I keep getting distracted by novels that are somewhat easier to read mindlessly.

This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

I was thinking about skipping this week’s WWW, but I actually managed to finish a book just in the nick of time! I have mixed feelings about this. It’s Schwab. AKA the writing was superb. It was a unique idea and written well, but somehow I just wasn’t….feeling it? I think objectively, it was a good book. Something was just not clicking for me, maybe I’ll have figured that out by the time I write a full review on it.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Actually kind of stumped right now. I keep rifling through my TBR list and nothing is screaming READ ME NOW. Anyone have any suggestions for must-reads? I’m all ears!

Happy Reading!

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

Finally hopping back on this series! I’m about a hundred or so pages in and I’m glad to see Maas didn’t just shrug off everything that happened to Feyre. The trauma and stress of what happened is apparent in her character and her relationship with Tamlin, which feels quite real. Unfortunately, it also makes the first part of this book so heavy and dark and difficult for me to get through, because you’re viewing everything through a lens of  depression.

Plus, her current relationships with Tamlin and Rhys feel so toxic at the moment, which is also kind of cringe-y to me (cue Twilight flashbacks). I’m hoping that changes though at least for one of them. I know how highly this book/series has been received in the community – how do you all feel about the “romance” aspects of it?

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

As you’ll see below, I went on a Victoria Schwab binge recently and was totally creeping on her author’s page on Goodreads. This book happened to be on her recently read list with a 5 star rating. Coming from an author I love, that’s a huge endorsement. Anyways, it’s reading like an old Russian folktale right now, full of whimsy. Me gusta so far.

A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab

Please excuse me as I ugly cry in the corner here. I loved this series and I’m so so so so so so so so so so so so so so sad it’s over. There have been rumors of a show or a movie and I so hope that’s true, because man, I miss these characters already. I’m definitely going to be ordering pretty special edition hardcovers of this trilogy to put on the shelf.

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

Schwab has easily become one of my favorite authors. Her ideas are so creative, her characters well developed and I drink up her writing style like a smooth smoky scotch. All those things were here in Vicious, but I do think it was a bit slow for me and just didn’t quite have all the twists and clever scheming that I expected. Especially from a novel that has two genius super villains pitted against each other. That being said, I know she wrote this book as if it may be cut off as a standalone, but then had the opportunity to flesh it out further. So I’m hoping the next few books really kick it up a notch and we get the same complexity in plot that we did with the Shades of Magic trilogy.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I’ve got my eye on The Shadow Cipher (York #1) by Laura RubyI just got my hands on a digital copy recently and am pretty excited to start, but I’m already juggling 2/3 books at the moment. So it’ll have to wait until I knock at least one of them out. Ruby’s debut book, Bone Gap, stole my heart though. I recommend it to everyone. I hope York has some of that same magic and shine. I did also pick up The Midnight Star by Marie Lu when I grabbed ACOMAF from the library. So depending on whether I get through ACOMAF before the due date….Midnight Star may be in the near future too.

Happy Reading!
