Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor

Friends, I have a confession. I DNF’d A Court of Mist and Fury. I couldn’t do it. It wasn’t that it was awful, it was just not my cup of tea. Maybe someday I’ll get back to it, but end of the day, I didn’t look forward to reading it. So good-bye for now, Feyre.

I haven’t been reading too much lately. Work’s been stealing my day again, but I’ve been listening to the Days of Blood and Starlight audiobook on my runs. I have my qualms with the series, but it’s such an entertaining read. And easily one of the best audiobooks to listen to.

Mistborn : The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

Really enjoyed this one! Though the middle bit dragged a little, I loved this world and these characters. Perfect for all the fantasy buffs out there who are in it for the world-building, the action and the epics. It was a nice break from all the YA fantasy. It was dark and bloody at times with none of the teenage fluff. Also, look at this cover! How beautiful is that? Reminds me of the Fables covers a little bit. Intrigued to see where this goes as a series because I felt like the first novel reads so well as a standalone. Not sure where it’ll go from here.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I don’t think I’ll pick up the Mistborn sequel just yet. Strange the Dreamer is really calling to me, but I’ve also been trying to get my hands on a copy of Our Dark Duet. As always, who knows? We’ll see.

What are you currently reading?

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

Still working my way through these two. Though it’s slow going because I find Maas’ writing style to be kind of slow and repetitive sometimes. You don’t have to tell me every time his purple eyes change direction, thank you very much. The Bear and the Nightingale just hasn’t fully drawn me in yet. It’s still too early on and I keep getting distracted by novels that are somewhat easier to read mindlessly.

This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

I was thinking about skipping this week’s WWW, but I actually managed to finish a book just in the nick of time! I have mixed feelings about this. It’s Schwab. AKA the writing was superb. It was a unique idea and written well, but somehow I just wasn’t….feeling it? I think objectively, it was a good book. Something was just not clicking for me, maybe I’ll have figured that out by the time I write a full review on it.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Actually kind of stumped right now. I keep rifling through my TBR list and nothing is screaming READ ME NOW. Anyone have any suggestions for must-reads? I’m all ears!

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

Finally hopping back on this series! I’m about a hundred or so pages in and I’m glad to see Maas didn’t just shrug off everything that happened to Feyre. The trauma and stress of what happened is apparent in her character and her relationship with Tamlin, which feels quite real. Unfortunately, it also makes the first part of this book so heavy and dark and difficult for me to get through, because you’re viewing everything through a lens of  depression.

Plus, her current relationships with Tamlin and Rhys feel so toxic at the moment, which is also kind of cringe-y to me (cue Twilight flashbacks). I’m hoping that changes though at least for one of them. I know how highly this book/series has been received in the community – how do you all feel about the “romance” aspects of it?

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

As you’ll see below, I went on a Victoria Schwab binge recently and was totally creeping on her author’s page on Goodreads. This book happened to be on her recently read list with a 5 star rating. Coming from an author I love, that’s a huge endorsement. Anyways, it’s reading like an old Russian folktale right now, full of whimsy. Me gusta so far.

A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab

Please excuse me as I ugly cry in the corner here. I loved this series and I’m so so so so so so so so so so so so so so sad it’s over. There have been rumors of a show or a movie and I so hope that’s true, because man, I miss these characters already. I’m definitely going to be ordering pretty special edition hardcovers of this trilogy to put on the shelf.

vicious

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

Schwab has easily become one of my favorite authors. Her ideas are so creative, her characters well developed and I drink up her writing style like a smooth smoky scotch. All those things were here in Vicious, but I do think it was a bit slow for me and just didn’t quite have all the twists and clever scheming that I expected. Especially from a novel that has two genius super villains pitted against each other. That being said, I know she wrote this book as if it may be cut off as a standalone, but then had the opportunity to flesh it out further. So I’m hoping the next few books really kick it up a notch and we get the same complexity in plot that we did with the Shades of Magic trilogy.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I’ve got my eye on The Shadow Cipher (York #1) by Laura RubyI just got my hands on a digital copy recently and am pretty excited to start, but I’m already juggling 2/3 books at the moment. So it’ll have to wait until I knock at least one of them out. Ruby’s debut book, Bone Gap, stole my heart though. I recommend it to everyone. I hope York has some of that same magic and shine. I did also pick up The Midnight Star by Marie Lu when I grabbed ACOMAF from the library. So depending on whether I get through ACOMAF before the due date….Midnight Star may be in the near future too.

Finally starting this series and I am loving it so far. Really quite a cool world Schwab has built. Can’t wait to see where it goes.

Whoo! This one was a slooooow burn for me, but I’ve finally finished it. Full review will be out end of the month as always, but safe to say my feelings on this one are positive.

What do you think you’ll read next?

So many options. Ugh. This section of WWW’s are always super hard for me. I honestly never decide what I’m going to read in advance. My TBR is really only a muggy mental list and I never know what’s coming up until I’ve started. That being said, I want to pick up A Court of Mist and Fury because everyone says the series just gets better, but I also have been reading a lot of fantasy lately. I may need a change of pace, so maybe I’ll look into a NA contemporary novel. Any recommendations?

What are you currently reading?

I’m still working my way through Cinder and A Court of Thorns and Roses from my last WWW, but I’ve also picked Shadow and Bone back up. I got about 70% of the way through last year and for some reason never finished it. Figured I could knock it out pretty quickly!

I didn’t so much read this one as I did listen to the audiobook on my hour long drives back and forth from visiting my parents. Super entertaining. I’ll have a full review in my end of month recap.

What do you think you’ll read next?

To be honest, I’m not sure about this. I have a bunch on my TBR list, but don’t have one picked out yet. Might continue picking up the Lunar Chronicles if I end up really liking Cinder. Same goes for ACOTAR, but I’m almost done with that one and not quite in love yet. So we’ll see. Link your WWW’s below! I’d love to check them out.

What are you currently reading?

I usually have two or three books going on at a time, one on my kindle, one just on my google play books and maybe one physical copy. Depending on where I am, I’ll read one or the other. Currently switching back and forth between these two…

I’m finally doing it, folks. These series have been waiting not-so-quietly on my TBR list and I guess February is the month for hopping on the bandwagon. I haven’t gotten too far on either yet, but you guys will be the first to know when I finish.

More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera

Just knocked out these two recently! My full thoughts on both will be out in my February Book Reviews post at the end of the month, but both were pretty satisfying reads. Last month I read a bunch of “just-okay” kind of books, but February has been kind to me so far. Really digging the books I’ve picked up.

I really loved More Happy Than Not, so I’ve been eyeing Silvera’s next book. I’m a little scared though. I have an awful feeling it’s going to break my heart again and I’m not sure I’m ready for those feelings.
